Leading the work of REL Northwest is Dr. Christopher (Chris) Mazzeo, an expert in the formation and management of research alliances and an experienced policy researcher and evaluator. In this role, he supervises more than 70 people engaged in rigorous research, technical assistance, and dissemination projects. At Education Northwest, REL Northwest’s parent organization, Christopher serves as director of evidence and policy, consulting on evidence-based projects and directing policy studies that seek to improve the use of data and research at the state and local levels. Previously, Christopher was associate director for policy and outreach at the Consortium on Chicago School Research. He holds a Ph.D. in social sciences, policy, and educational practice from Stanford University.
In her role as deputy director, Fiona Helsel is responsible for REL Northwest’s analytic technical assistance work and provides quality assurance across various tasks. Specializing in early childhood education, she supervises work in this emerging priority area for the Northwest region. At REL Northwest’s parent organization, Education Northwest, Fiona provides research and evaluation support and leads the evaluation of the Northwest Comprehensive Center. She has 15 years of experience directing projects, managing staff and subcontractors, conceptualizing and conducting evaluations, providing technical assistance, and working closely with local, state, and federal agencies. Fiona earned her Ph.D. in developmental studies at Purdue University.
